Twilight In The Medina

What is this sweet intoxication?
travelling in the hot evening air
laced with spice and the scent of bare skin
the radiant warmth of cobble stones

Is it the heady smell of citrus?
drifting from windows all clad in blue
overture to the foreign chatter
the streets awake as the twilight falls

Did you smell my infatuation?
as you lead me down those narrow stairs
a smokey room with beaded curtains
mint tea and the sense of adventure

Would that fragrant perfume still linger?
in the gaudy fabric of the place
I doubt that it would stimulate me
quite as much as when we stole away

The Unknown

and still his body calls

his bones do yearn

for sacred rest

in native soil

Cherry Blossom

It is so very tranquil here

in the shadow of these great trees

laden with sweet cherry blossom

and a chorus of native birds

I can tread the footsteps to you

with no guidance or direction

between the fine hewn granite stones

your name etched in permanent white

Every time I am drawn to it

I the magnetic supplicant

hide brimming eyes behind glasses

wonder whether you are watching

and whether you’d be proud of me today…

An Evening Haiku

Night chill settles in

Lightning in the distant hills

Thunder in the grass

Memories Of A Drunken Concert

It started in that tipping point
before the hour of midnight
as I wandered from the first bar
and went searching for the next

After vacating the theatre
I had met a group of actors
but they couldn’t last the distance
so I set out on my own

And the pots of beer were flowing
all the different shades of amber
the patrons ply their chatter
I make eyes across the bar

With my signals not receiving
I decide to venture onwards
so take up my leather jacket and
make a beeline for the door

As suburb dwellers scrambled
for the last train home til morning
I encountered fellow travellers
outside some dim-lit crowded dive

When they asked where I was going
made a comment on my fashion
appreciate the rock-star t-shirt
you must linger one bar more

In the cigarette smoke fog screen
we establish they are German
produce a beaten old guitar and
make our way up from the hum

As we stumble down La Trobe street
filled with liquor and good feelings
we busk Beatles, Pop and Bowie
passers by break in to dance

We exchange a farewell embrace
at the steps to their dark hostel
as I see the creeping sunrise
light the park near my hotel

I’d have liked to keep on singing
but the sheets and blankets comfort
and instead I slip to sleep while
the clock hands signal day

And just like my fleeting dreamscape
my great musical career
dissipates in to the memories
of the drunken concert band

Oblivion

Gather everything you own
and stack it against the door
barricade yourself from all
the creeping uncertainty

Then shred your finest linens
and block all crack and crevice
seal your world up tightly
from the poisoned air outside

Paint the glass with black tar pitch
it stings the eyes and lungs but
obscures your chamber nicely
against the harsh light of day

Like the pilgrim Dante found
you’ve made your home your gallows
and in that isolation
you resist the winds of change

The Letter Ritual

People say that it’s outdated

a quaint archaism extinct

I take delight every word

my pen reveals in deep blue ink

When the envelope delivered

a wad of pages then unfurled

enter now the deep enchantment

from a dear friend across the world

Leave It To The Experts #2

Yes, I’m sure you’ve spent a lot of time

deciding on this plan of action

but let me put you right on one or

two quite seperate specific points

so when this seedling comes to fruit you

won’t have any catastrophic

flaws that we could have avoided

if you’d checked your ego at the door

Jargon & Process

Sometimes I will fulfil the brief

and tread the paths of diplomats

with hand wringing and feathered speech

niceties and pointless process

In certain moods I cannot see

the point in playing teacher’s pet

when all the phoney talk has flown

rest quite assured I won’t bow down

When It Comes

Friend, promise me will you?

when it comes, you will know it so

do not let it pass

It may present as just a

moment from the ether

when all the world goes silent

but do not let it pass
