Thoughts – Collected #1

What strange creatures we are
attracted to such noises

The constant hum and buzz of them
would drive other species mad

And yet we are drawn in by it
the chaos of this competition

Who can shout the loudest
in a room full of shouting people

Who can scream the loudest
and does anybody hear?

The Beach At Night Time

The moonlight is a pale white disc
reflecting on the saturated sand
keeping pace with wet feet
just beyond my reach
this early-evening goddess

Faster, faster I move forward
leaving deep wells of black water
filling quickly and cold in my wake
others have left footprint pools
faster and yet she eludes me

The rising tides send crystal sheets
across the smooth settled shore
and in a moment of chaos
the moon-shine is lost in ripples
fractured in to a million sprites

Recent Erosion

It’s very strange to feel your armour

eroded by the storms of late

polished steel and impenetrable

built up over many seasons

now tarnished and diminished

worn down in spots and rusted

by the frequent acid rains

Summer Column

Look at all you

beautiful things

fresh and green

burst like fireworks

from winter soil

in to the bright

summer

Daisies

Daisies on the fresh-cut lawn
your sunny resurgence marks
the end of winter darkness

Warmth upon frozen ground
has hastened your springtime
resurrection

Grandmother’s Town

Yes you are from here but
this place has changed so much
would you recognise it?

Maybe the bones

The clock tower is still here
which my grandfather knew
that he rode to in the mornings

And the lions in the park

But the streets are so busy
and the faces aren’t the same
all the voices now are different

It’s like the league of nations

Maybe the bypass is a blessing
no longer have to wander through
the streets of your Father’s city

Yes, he’s still here

There’s a hip new pub now
in the church where you married
I’m glad you haven’t seen it

Spared that indignity

Not A Flower

Beautiful summer bloom

illuminated in the sunlight

did I pick you too soon?

from your comfortable vine

you seemed to call out

with your show of petals

and thick lush foliage

and now you shrink

beneath my every touch

is it fear or delight?

that moves you to shiver

and now I tremble too

was it so selfish of me?

You Deserve It…

Drag a heathen non-believer
to the temple of the sacred I
and offer them up for slaughter
bathe in the flowing likes

Genuflect your own reflection
live your sweet life through the glass
sometimes a vanity mirror
more often a glowing screen

Sad face for the starving children
while you quaff your Sunday brunch
they truly need all the promotion
don’t forget to Instagram that…

Share your riches with the worthy

you’ll get more followers that way
don’t believe the salty haters
you just need to take some ‘me time’

You’ve worked so hard today

You deserve it…

Morning Flight

As we ascend, the ocean is glass
expensive, patterned venetian glass
with a rainbow shimmer
impossible to describe
impossible to photograph
changing with our perspective

Far below us the land is emerald velvet
the finest of luxurious fabrics
sewn in to paddocks
crushed at the hills
criss-crossed asphalt seams
traffic a man made oddity

Gossamer thread-like streams
weave in and out of the landscape
precious silver… no platinum
glints back in to our eyes
no great ruler could possess
a more beautiful or jewelled land

Interpretation

Am I so blind to true intentions?
Filter words to suit myself
Weave a story out of nothing
And see suggestions where they’re not…

Do I believe those inner voices?
Telling me to stop and think
Or let my mind hallucinate
Better to be Ignorant…
